Today, I bought my son a nice car for his 18th birthday. When I gave it to him, he just got mad and told me that if I really wanted to spend that much money on him, I should've used it to help him pay for college. FML

I personally think you should be content with his sudden burst of anger. The fact that he wants to learn and pay for his college, rather than sport around in a new car really does seem like a plus.

Well he's right, an education is a much better investment in your kids.

Maybe he was thinking his mom would drive him. You know, like 98% of people who live on campus.

26: Bus, train, bike, carpool, walk, or live next door, like everybody else. Hell, if getting to school is the only problem, he can drop a couple hundred sheqels on a used scooter. New car is completely unnecessary.

Why would he need his mom to drive him if he lives on campus? He's already there.

149 - Because it IS occasionally necessary to return home.

I can see his point of wanting to go to college but he should have at least been grateful that he has a vehicle

Oh, can it. It's a good thing that his son has such foresight, that he can see how a high-dollar education is more useful than a high-dollar car. Cars age, break, and lose value. Education never does. Also, good education-> good job-> higher pay-> nicer car(s) later on. Do you have any idea how long it takes to pay off a student loan for a four-year college, not including maybe grad school? It would be in your best $INTEREST$ to look that up.

Also, now he has to pay for car insurance and gas. What is he wasn't planning on having a car? That'll cost him a few thousand dollars minimum a year on top of not helping with tuition.

30: It's worth repeating: cars are damn expensive things to own, even if somebody buys one for you. That more like a burden than a gift, if you're a starving student.

The fact that I don't agree with you doesn't mean I don't understand.

Yeah jenn he should be so happy he got a new expensive responsibility instead of help with something as important as school. And saying he should sell the car is even stupider response than your first one and further shows you have no idea what youre talking about, he would get far less by selling it than op spent on it and op would be losing money not to mention selling a car your parents got you is more disrespectful than saying you'd rather have something more meaningful and practical. If they are lucky they can take the car back otherwise this college kid now has twice as many bills as before idk about you but most people aren't grateful when other people's gifts cost the recipient thousands of dollars for something they don't even want or need

That sucks, OP, but I do see his point. A car will cost him a lot of money (insurance, gas, repairs every now and then and what have you), while getting through college would help him get a good job so he could pay for his own car when he needs one. This is why you inquire what people would like for a gift before getting them something expensive.
