Today, I bought my son a nice car for his 18th birthday. When I gave it to him, he just got mad and told me that if I really wanted to spend that much money on him, I should've used it to help him pay for college. FML

It's nice that you got him a new car and I'm sure that he appreciated it but maybe college is more important for him now, at least he wants an education

College is more important than a car. He can get a degree that allows him to make enough money to buy his own car when he is ready.

what an ungrateful little shit. I wish my parents had given me a car to go to school.

There two ways of looking at this either he's stupid for acting like that for a car or smart for wanting school instead of a car and having his priorities in check

This is Israel though. The taxes on cars there are insane. (50% VAT!) Furthermore, gasoline is almost $10 a gallon over there. Also, parking is absolutely terrible in the major cities (you should really find a parking space before you buy a car in Tel Aviv). But public transportation is everywhere and is very well connected in the country. It's a very small country. So really, a car could end up being more expensive than college after a certain amount of time. Not that I excuse the kid's reaction, that was totally uncalled for.

Sounds like he's got his priorities straight. The fact you find this moment an "FML" moment shocks me that you were capable of raising a child this responsible.

He has an excellent point. Very mature for his age.

Take the car back get him something less as nice and help him pay for school. It's hard to say no to a kid that wants to go to school.

Even if your son was that ungrateful for a car, he should have told you in a much nicer way. If I had acted like that when my parents got my car, they would have taken it back, sold it, and kept the cash. If your son is that worried about money while in college, maybe he should get a part-time job (if he doesn't have one already). I have friends in university that have crazy busy school schedules, and they work. And in my experience, employers are quite willing to work with their employees with school schedules and such.
