Today, I bought my son a nice car for his 18th birthday. When I gave it to him, he just got mad and told me that if I really wanted to spend that much money on him, I should've used it to help him pay for college. FML

He obviously doesn't see the good at all. Depending on where college is for him he now has a way of commuting and therefore does not have to pay for room and board. Making college a lot cheaper :)

A lot cheaper? Perhaps you've forgotten cars need fuel. Fuel costs money. Insurance is mandatory. Insurance costs money. Cars can break. Repairs cost money. Education can't break, the only fuel required is your mind, and you don't need insurance.

Eeek. Seriously? What an ungrateful brat. 18 or not, he's an immature snot.

Really? You're judging him because he wants to ensure good education for himself rather than a material possession. That's not ungrateful, that's a kid raised the right way. The only downside is if he chose a college that's a little far, but that's what buses are for amongst other means of transportation.

Excuse me, but I would probably do the same if I got a car from my mom. Cars are expensive to maintain and he may be a fan of taking the bus or his bike or college may not be far away. If you knew he was going to college, you should also know that it's expensive. Seriously: college students can sometimes not manage to fall asleep at night because their worries about not having money to pay for college! As much as I understand your frustration, you didn't make the best choice...

oh my god for once a none spoiled brat whatever you did op was great and to be honest he has a point

I feel you. I thought the kid was going to bitch about the color or make of the car or something. Being as broke as I am, I'd love money for school rather than it going replacing my car...

At least he has good priorities, even if he did come across as a complete dick.

Dumbass if you don't have a car how are you going to get to college.?

At first I thought it was an FML, but he's right. If he wanted an education, I'm sure that would've been better. You added more onto what he has to pay for now with that car.

Firstly, let me go on record for saying this: There are way too many dads who do absloutely nothing at all for their kids. You went out, and you got your son a serious gift for his 18th, which is a big birthday, and that's pretty cool of you. This being said....In my humble opinion a first car should always be reliable, but a bit of a wreck, because you know that they're probably gonna get knocked around some, and although you made a great effort, you've got to give your kid credit; he wants to further his education, and that's a pretty important thing. Return the car, put the money aside for his education and take some time to talk with him about college. This is a great opportunity for you two to learn more about each other.
