I think he's smart. I would rather take a used car that's not in amazing shape but gets the job done, than having a really nice car and having school debt. Makes more practical sense.
He is a smart young man it seemes.
We have no idea if going to college would be a better investment for OP's son since we don't know his major. Most college degrees lead to crushing debt with no chances of repayment. The cost of a car would pay for approximately one year of college, so even without the car the kid would be in crazy debt.
your son has more sense than you
On one hand, he could sell the car...
Meh, I think people are wrong to call the OP ungrateful. He's kind of buggered now- his parents have not only not helped him with the debt he's going to get in, they've given him a gift that will almost certainly push him further into debt (or get him bitched and moaned at if he doesn't use it). I'd be pretty upset if I was in debt up to my eyeballs (or was embarking on something that would make me so) and someone gave me a really expensive object. Not only that, but an object that would cost my already debt-ridden ass a hell of a lot of money in the future. The important part of giving and receiving presents is the thought that goes into it. It's about knowing the recipient and what they would like to receive, not just buying something expensive and flash regardless of the circumstances.
Wow.... your son is a bit of a nerd.. And ungrateful as hell. I didn't go to college and would have killed for a car. My parents gave me a $500 car that broke down within 6 months of me having it. He should consider himself lucky!!
A nerd for wanting to better himself? Really? Maybe you should have gone to college, built up a skyscraper of debt, and work to pay that off. A car would be nothing but one more thing OP's son would have to throw money at. I'm glad that there are people like the son who would rather have an education than a car. There are better ways to decline a gift, I won't deny that. But maybe more thought should have gone into the gift.
At least he knows which would benefit him more in the future. A car may be nice now, but four years down the road, the student debt he'll have racked up won't be worth it.
Although it's kind of good that he cares about education, that was a dick move -_-
i think the son reacted the wrong way. a car is a great gift but if he didnt want it he should have said "thank you for this great gift but perhaps we could return it and spend the money to help with my college tuition." i would take the car and refuse to pay for his college after that reaction.
