Am I being detained?

By KidJwal - 28/02/2012 17:10 - United States

Today, I had to explain to a cop that the reason I was speeding was because my girlfriend was in the hospital due to a car accident. He was working the accident just ten minutes before and saw me leave behind the ambulance. He still gave me a ticket. FML

Sorry, but ydi. What if you had caused another accident. I understand it's an emergency with someone you care about, but that doesn't mean you can break the law without consequences.

I'm a firefighter and we run ambulances also. The cop did the right thing. You're not supposed to follow behind the ambulance. Have you been trained to drive thru busy city streets like that? And what are you going to do at the hospital when you get there right behind the ambulance? You're just gonna stand in the waiting room. Putting on your hazard lights does not make you an emergency vehicle. Plain and simple. We've had people crash trying to follow ambulances because as soon as the ambulance went thru the intersection everyone thought it was ok to go and ran right into the moron driving behind it.

your girlfriend was involved in a car accident and you're writing this FML? that's just awful! i hope everything goes well and she's okay. she'll be in my prayers :) xoxo

What does training have to do with driving? I've hit almost run into more cops than other cars. And if i had hit them it would have been the cops fault. Whatever training your talking about is crap. Seriously.

#34, you are right.. Nevertheless: acab...

Really? I guess that why when I got promoted to Fire Driver I had to take courses to learn how to avoid idiots like you. We have to get this big ass heavy truck to a scene where time is of the essence. And we have to watch out for dumbasses that don't yield and pull to the right. All while thinking of which way to approach the scene that would be easiest to grab a hydrant and show our captains 3 sides of the building. But I guess you could just hop in one and do it automatically.

Tilltheendoftime - he's talking about driving training which ambulance drivers (and cops) get.

#69 that's why I'm a firefighter. I don't like Cops either.

#72: Thank you for driving that big heavy truck. It would be nice if you would park your elitist and entitled attitude at the door. The OP said "speeding". You just assumed that he was ambulance chasing and playing fireman. In some locales simply running the speed limit will get you run over. I will save an extended rant because I will feel it would be wasted on you. As for the illustrious driver training: google fa-110.pdf Roughly 17 pages of "physics" Which are mostly stupid powerpoint clip art and a few formulas. Contributing Factor for over 65% of accidents: no violation or failure. Please back up off your soap box and take that class again. I would like to thank all of our good hearted (and non-ego tripping) police, fire and emt for all that they do. It is the douches that give emergency responders a bad name.

Read the OP again. He said he "left behind the ambulance." Now you go look up the NFPA code books the take Driver/Operator Pumping Apparatus and Driver/Operator Aerial and dedicate your life to helping and saving other people, and getting paid very low wages. Then come talk to me. I'm a very humble person, but when it comes to something that I believe strongly in, I voice my opinion. Thank you.

You're the worst driver if you need training To avoid traffic.

Oh yeah 139 cuz you could totally get behind the wheel of a firetruck or ambulance and drive at 60 miles per hour through a city with a dying patient no problem. It's not Grand Theft Auto you idiot....

no, the law says dont speed otherwise youll end up in an accident, they're just doing their jobs. op, hope your girlfriend is alright, but seriously? didnt you learn from your girlfriend's unfortunate accident? SPEED KILLS

The police officer is just doing their job.

Love the profile pic dude. Great album by great artists.

What a ******* ass I hate cops for that shit

He was just doing his job, is that wrong?

Yes because speeding is more then 90% of tickets given by police maybe they should try stopping some real criminals like the ones selling drugs to your kids

31 - That cop could've saved OP's LIFE. What if he'd gotten into a car accident, hmm? What if while speeding he crashed into someone else and caused them or himself serious injury/death? True we don't know, but are you saying you'd roll the dice on every other drivers life on the road that night? The cop did his job, you shouldn't be berating them for doing their ******* JOB. Be happy the cop stopped OP from possibly causing more issues or emergencies. I'm sorry about your GF, OP, but you were putting your and everyone else's lives in danger by doing that. You could've just drove to the hospital, but instead put yourself and innocent people in harms way. Think before you act, or you'll end up as another casualty of the road. Or causing another family grief when you strike a loved ones car. **** HER life, not yours, be thankful you're not in the same situation because of your actions.

43, speed doesn't kill, stopping unexpectedly does.

JurassicHole 5

64 - So going 60 mph into the side of someone's car as the turn out of a parking lot or another lane won't kill? Even if it didn't kill, it'd still cause major, if not significant damage to all involved. Stop trying to support OP's stupidity, makes you all look like morons.

That would be the stopping unexpectedly part...

Jurassic - he was making a joke. It's like saying "Guns don't kill; the little holes the bullets make do."

JurassicHole 5

75 - Well, I didn't catch the joke (obviously), but that's true.

58 - The police officer could have pulled over OP, and just left him with a warning. There was no need to charge him money for speeding if it was for an emergency situation, all this did was add more stress to his already stressful day. This is the same reason that if someone is going to be in trouble for a crime while recooperating in the hospital, an officer will not immediately tell him about the trouble, he leaves it for another time to not stress the victim.

Retards. It isn't the cops fault that you were breaking the law. Grow some balls and take responsibility for your own freakin actions!!

You could've showed up to the hospital in an ambulance and taken someone else there with you…

What, cops doing their job by stopping someone from risking their own lives speeding/potentially putting other people on the roads lives in danger? What OP did was stupid and wrong, you suggesting the fault lies on the cops shows what's wrong with society today.

GoW_Chick 14

So what's wrong with the system is a cop effectively doing his job? Yes it sucks, and I understand why OP is in a hurry, but that doesn't mean they should possibly be the cause of another accident. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean there's something wrong with the system.

JurassicHole 5

Trust me out judicial system is screwed up, we've bigger problems than someone speeding, like what about the illegal immigrants who are here, what about sending them back, what about abortion, I can kill a baby before its born but it's illegal to kill it after its out. And the people I spent time with in training to be cops, a lot of them are messed up, or hypocritical. The system needs a change, I just wish people would stand up.

Yeah um..your girlfriend just got in a car accident but you expect to be put above the law so you can risk the lives around you as well as your own? Good on him, doesn't give you a right.

tdawg4200 0

All of you people are total assholes. This guys's girlfriend was on the way to the hospital so I would expect him to speed there. If it happened to you, would you drive the speed limit? I ******* doubt it. Plus, he never said how fast he was going. 10 or 20 km over isn't going to cause an accident just like that. OP, I feel so bad for you. Hope everything works out well.

JurassicHole 5

104- It's thinking like yours that causes more problems. Nothing puts you or anyone else above the law, OP could've gotten into a wreck or caused one by speeding. You're justifying putting every other motorist in danger because of what happened to his gf. I had to drive to the hospital when I found out my grandma had collapsed at home and I wasn't going to risk myself or another drivers safety just to wait in the waiting room.

Sorry, but ydi. What if you had caused another accident. I understand it's an emergency with someone you care about, but that doesn't mean you can break the law without consequences.

But if he got there behind the ambulance he'd be stuck in the waiting room anyway.

I agree with #33 #7 If this had happen to your boyfriend/ girlfriend I'm positive you would speed to the hospital too!!!

When my dad was dying at home, I drove there responsibly like a normal person. I didn't feel like causing any accidents and making anyone else suffer that day because of my actions.

laxbro182 1

Yes he probably would speed, but then he would deserve to get a ticket for it!

That doesn't change the law. Your rights end where some else's begin.

I agree that he shouldn't be speeding, but I think that in that kind of a situation the cop would be more understanding. They speed for no reason at all, I've had cops behind me tailgating me when I'm going a little over already. The cop could've easily followed the man to the hospital, or even escorted him if he could've. And once there, once he saw his girlfriend, THEN a ticket would have been more appropriate to write up.

Ouch fyl. A hospital bill and a ticket. That sucks. Hopefully your girlfriend is ok!

Its your girlfriend, not family. If it had been a family member, the cop probably let you off, but its not family. I hope the GF is ok

I hope they wouldn't. There's nothing you can do by getting to the hospital quicker. The doctors have your family in good hands. And that's no reason to endanger others by speeding.

Ohh so because it's JUST his girlfriend, he shouldn't have been rushing and the cop couldn't possibly understand why he'd be rushing to be with her. A loved one is a loved one, family or not. That cop was just a dick.

No, that cop was doing his job. It's not an issue of love, it's an issue of endangering the safety of others. So you don't cause another accident and put more people in the hospital.

18 - If you just got news that one of your close family members/significant other had just gone to hospital after being involved in a car accident, would you stick to the speed limit? Limits feel so slow when you're in a rush. And the worst feeling is thinking that you aren't going to make it in time.

You're right, 37, but sometimes your brain should be in charge, not your heart. When you're driving, you have to think about everyone's safety. Crossing the speed limit and following an ambulance is dangerous, try to imagine how awful it would be if you put other people in the hospital, just because you were in such a rush to go to the hospital. So yes, eventhough OP's reaction is totally understandable, it's still the wrong one. (ps, I love my boyfriend more than any family member I have.)

I have an idea, what if " safety" response personal had to do the speed limit and obey the law? Then there wouldnt be this problem.

^ I have an idea; no. They don't have to obey the speed limit for a REASON.

TexasJosh 0

What if safety personnel had to follow speed limits... Well then you would be complaining about how they didn't get somewhere in time to save a persons life/house etc. because they took their sweet time. I can't believe how many truly idiotic people there are on fml.

I've been with my boyfriend for 10 years. We have a child together. I consider him my family as does he.

Except Safety personnel and emergency vehicles have these BRIGHT ASS LIGHTS and REALLY LOUD SIRENS and there are LAWS that state you have to YIELD to them. Your car does not have ANY of those things, so you speeding and putting everyone around you in danger is bad, and you deserve to be ticketed for it. What happened if, because you were so distraught that you were speeding to the hospital, that YOU got into a car accident huh? Or you CAUSED an accident? You're selfish for putting your own problem above other people's LIVES.
