Am I being detained?

Today, I had to explain to a cop that the reason I was speeding was because my girlfriend was in the hospital due to a car accident. He was working the accident just ten minutes before and saw me leave behind the ambulance. He still gave me a ticket. FML

Sorry, but ydi. What if you had caused another accident. I understand it's an emergency with someone you care about, but that doesn't mean you can break the law without consequences.

I'm a firefighter and we run ambulances also. The cop did the right thing. You're not supposed to follow behind the ambulance. Have you been trained to drive thru busy city streets like that? And what are you going to do at the hospital when you get there right behind the ambulance? You're just gonna stand in the waiting room. Putting on your hazard lights does not make you an emergency vehicle. Plain and simple. We've had people crash trying to follow ambulances because as soon as the ambulance went thru the intersection everyone thought it was ok to go and ran right into the moron driving behind it.

And cops wonder why they are hated sometimes!!

Taking out his frustration on you for not being able to stop the ambulance for speeding.

You know it's against the law to go over the speed limit and you made a choice to do that man up and admit responsibility for your choice.

That's annoying, but cops are just doing their job.

Someone didn't have their dunkin' fix this morning.

I bet that same cop sped by and also ran a red. I've seen that before.

I'm not terribly surprised at all the people calling the cop an asshole. He COULD have let you off with a warning, but he was doing his job. When car accident victims arrive at my trauma bay, it takes me about 5 seconds to determine if they are seriously injured, but it takes at least 15-20 minutes to determine the full extent of the injuries. Speeding to get to the hospital will get you there a few seconds (maybe a minute or two) earlier, so you'll end up sitting in the waiting room until I come out and find you. Don't speed like an idiot or else you risk ending up in the adjacent trauma bay yourself.
