Am I being detained?

Today, I had to explain to a cop that the reason I was speeding was because my girlfriend was in the hospital due to a car accident. He was working the accident just ten minutes before and saw me leave behind the ambulance. He still gave me a ticket. FML

Sorry, but ydi. What if you had caused another accident. I understand it's an emergency with someone you care about, but that doesn't mean you can break the law without consequences.

I'm a firefighter and we run ambulances also. The cop did the right thing. You're not supposed to follow behind the ambulance. Have you been trained to drive thru busy city streets like that? And what are you going to do at the hospital when you get there right behind the ambulance? You're just gonna stand in the waiting room. Putting on your hazard lights does not make you an emergency vehicle. Plain and simple. We've had people crash trying to follow ambulances because as soon as the ambulance went thru the intersection everyone thought it was ok to go and ran right into the moron driving behind it.

Cops are even more dickish at the end of the month. Gotta meet that quota.

aww im sorry :( that really DOES suck. cops take wayy too much advantage of their power

Umm no? They are enforcing the law that people are too stupid to follow. And it doesnt matter how late in the month it is. It's not the cops fault that your stupid...

Which power would that be? The one where they took an oath to uphold the law? To protect their community from danger both foreign and domestic? Or the one that says they would give their life for yours? Everyone thinks they have a reason why the law doesn't apply to them.

Just wondering, couldn't you also get in the ambulance? Or is that forbidden in the usa?

Well not all family. Couple of years ago, a family member had to be driven to the ER. We were in the middle of nowhere, and they told us only one person can be with the wounded.

It is frequently forbidden because it is a very tiny space and there's no guarantee that you wouldn't just get in the way while they're trying to work.

No you cannot ride in the ambulance bc if something were to happen to the non injured then the Paramedic has two patients. It's also a liability. But if the patient is under the age of 12 then they have to ride up front with permission of the ambulance services medical director.

I'm a emt and seriously the worst thing you can do is try and keep up with the ambulance. I mean look at it like this you being there is great but getting there 10.min later then the ambulance isn't going to make her any less healthy you deserve it

Couldn't have said it better myself. Sensible comment thank you!

You shouldn't have been speeding, whatever the circumstances, but I do think it's a bit heartless of the cop. Hope your girlfriend's ok.

While I do not agree with the cop's ethics, the law is the law.

Why shouldn't you get a ticket? You are going to cause another accident and either send someone else to the hospital or join your girlfriend in a bed next to hers...

More then 90% of tickets are for speeding maybe cops should spend more time catching real criminals like the ones selling drugs to kids instead of people who just drive a little quicker

Wow... I don't even know where to begin. From your comment I get the feeling you're a law breaking asshole, that or you don't really see the logic fail in what you're saying. **** the police? Nah, **** the dumbasses like you I have to share a world with.

I bet you pulled that "fact" out of your ass. Cops do what they're told to. I know many of them who would jump on opportunities to arrest people who sell drugs to kids, bit those people try pretty hard to stay hidden. It's not just like walk out in the street and bust a few dealers.

YDI... Very dangerous to follow the amb. Hope ur gf is ok.
