Today, my boyfriend woke up wheezing terribly, aching, and sneezing. He's allergic to cats. I have 2 and they are my babies. He gave me an ultimatum, him or the cats. I haven't figured out how I'm going to tell him that I choose the cats. FML

KEEP THE CATS! Good for you OP, if your boyfriend just spent the night for the first time and wants you to get rid of your kittens, he's not a keeper, especially considering many peoples allergies will acclimate to specific cats. First off, you've obviously had the cats much longer that the boyfriend and are more attached to them and secondly you can find a new boyfriend who does get along with your "babies". Guys a jerk and you+him = not compatible, dump him.

I am deeply sadden by all the comments calling the boyfriend a "dick" or "not worth it." There is no magic cure-all to get rid of allergies and there is also varying levels of reactions. Personally, I get so sick around cats (and dogs to a lesser extent) that my wheezing and coughing continues till my airways close off and I die. End of story. If the OP's boyfriend felt seriously enough about the relationship that he would ask her to give up her "babies," she could show enough respect to at least try to come up with a solution. When my girlfriend and I get married, she knows there is no way for us to have any kind of animal with hair, even though she loves dogs. Many in this thread state that a relationship should be about compromise, but the OP has no right in hell to ask her boyfriend to compromise his health and ability to breathe. For those agreeing with the OP, I hope you choke, even just temporary, just so you know what it feels like not to be able to breathe like a person with a severe allergy. The OP is a bitch and deserves to die as a old single cat lady, may she have a cat for each year of her life and they turn on her and devour her.

It's a different thing to be told to abandon pets you already have and to decide not to have pets in the future. Also, there are hypoallergenic pets, so your girlfriend could have a dog even while living with you. The OP might not be fit to live with an heavily allergic person, but I am frankly disgusted by all the people here saying she deserves to DIE. What the hell is wrong with you?

Dude it's a lot different to not get animals out of respect for someones allergies than to abandon ones you already have because someone new with allergies comes into your life. You seem rather cold and cruel not only to animals, but to people too. Maybe it's you who deserves to die alone

@409: Apparently the OP isn't feeling as serious about the relationship as her boyfriend is, if she wants to choose the cats over him. She isn't asking him to choke to a terrible death, she is going to break up with him. Which she has a right to do. I think it's unfair to call her a bitch for choosing the cats over someone she couldn't have been with for very long if this is the first time he's slept over at her house.

You've made the right choice. Don't let any of the douchebags here tell you otherwise. They're pathetic miserable failures who will never get laid in their lives and have to ruin all happiness for anyone else with their bile and hatred. You're a normal person and will find another boyfriend without any problems. Ideally a new boyfriend who isn't a bitch who makes demands like expecting you to get rid of your cats because of his entitled ass.
