Today, it's my birthday. Today is also the day my grandma died, six years ago. Since then, I get to sit through any sort of attempted celebration while my mom sobs and drinks herself into a stupor in the background. FML

She's had 6 years of 'alone' time opportunities, so I think it's time for OP to have the birthday he deserves, considering he's waited so long for his mother to get over. Besides you can't leave the woman who gave BIRTH to you out of your BIRTHday, it's just not the same.

That depends on the mood of the drinking. My family lost a lot of members on the same day and we hold a wake every year on that day, but its more a celebration of family and their lives, even though it ends up plenty drunk.

I'm sure that not only is she upset about not having a birthday basically, but also the fact that her mother is in so much pain. So if they were to celebrate it at a later time, don't you think it might get her mom upset all over again?

Aww my grandpa died on my 16th birthday, and my mom reminds me every year but doesn't go into that of an extreme.
