Today, while I was babysitting, the little girl wanted to show me a picture that her mom had just sent to the family iPad via iMessage. Trying to be helpful, I clicked iMessage, only to see pictures of her father's erect penis. She won't stop asking about the "hotdog" in the picture. FML

If all of your Apple devices are linked to the same iTunes account and are all iMessage compatible, then any text, that is sent via iMessage, as is the case in this situation, are all automatically sent to every device.

It may be the "family iPad" but the father probably has his text messages connected to it. That means that whenever someone sends a text to his phone it pops up on the iPad also. That's how my husband's iPad is set up, I'm assuming the wife is not up to speed on technology and sent the pic w/o knowing what would happen.
