Today, I bought my son a nice car for his 18th birthday. When I gave it to him, he just got mad and told me that if I really wanted to spend that much money on him, I should've used it to help him pay for college. FML

Your son's got a good head on his shoulders. Just remind him he can always sell the car to get the money...

At least he's got his priorities straight

A college kid myself, I have no need for a car and would find some extra financial support in paying for my degree much more useful. But I guess it depends whether OP's son lives on campus or not. Even if he doesn't live on campus it's generally cheaper to use public transport to get around, rather than paying for all the extra expenses that come with a car.

i'm a poor college student. i totally wish my parents would by me a car :(

He is right. You have a smart kid at least.

At least it wasn't the other way round. He seems to be a responsible teen!

That sounds like a lovely surprise and I understand how it would feel ungrateful but the lad has a point - a college degree is a lifelong investment and putting money towards that would be helping to secure his future.

As much as he may seem ungrateful to you, he's got a point. Money toward college fees will be much more useful than a car.

College is very expensive, but you never look a gift horse in the mouth...
