clearly, your mileage will vary... it depends on the recipient as to how much you ultimately spend.... buying something he/she likes outweighs the cost of said item, and if the monetary amount is the only thing that he/she cares about, then that should probably be a good indicator as to the rest of the marriage.... Remember, the simple rule of status: buying something you don't want, with money you don't have, to impress people you don't like anyway. Me I bought my fiancée a ring that cost under 400... she hates gold, the ring has her birthstone, it's unusual and is much more personal to her. She loves it, and it's a great conversation piece.... My engagement ring is equally unusual, but it ties our two cultures somewhat in it's design and is very personal to me. I love it. It works for us....
