Never enough

Today, I found out my ex-husband quit smoking and went back to school for his new girlfriend. I’d been behind his ass getting him to stop his bad habits for the entire year and a half of our marriage, and he didn’t wanna do it. Nice to know he wanted to be a better man… for someone else. FML

if you force someone to do something they're not ready to do, they're going to resent you for it. nagging about anything constantly will sour anyone to you. you knew he smoked when you married him

That's because this time it was HIS choice, not you badgering him to do it.

nagging someone won't get them to change, he has to make that choice

You spent a year and a half nagging him? And he didn't change for you? Shocker! Men aren't projects. And even if he did want to change, giving up on him after a year and a half says way more about you.

Unfortunately it usually takes something life changing to get someone to change. Your divorce (as hard as this may seem) might have been the motivation he needed to finally be better. So in a way, you may have been the motivation all along. From someone whos divorce almost broke him, take it from me. It is like a veil being lifted and I see things that were obvious, that without the experience of divorce, I would have never saw. Time heals all. And whiskey.
