Today, I went to clean my cat's litter box, not realizing she was in it. As I lifted the top half of the litter box up, she sprayed me with piss. FML

It sounds like it was covered, by the way the FML is worded. Most uncovered litter boxes don't have a top half.

Even if it's a covered box 1: they usually make some noise in the litter box. 2: did they not notice the cat wasn't around in its usual spots? I would check first

Whenever we had the boxes with a cover we would still have to take off the top to change it so we could put litter back in the box. never seen one where you leave the top on. hm.

seriously, the opening to a litter box is huge. how could you not have the common sense to check?

I have one that has a "stairway" into the covered dome litter box. It's literally impossible to see inside without opening it. OP likely has one similar.
