Today, I was kicked out of a job interview at a clothing store for "not dressing appropriately" for the occasion. I'd purchased my outfit from the same store just two days prior with my last $100. FML

Today, I had a job interview. I didn't have any clothes suitable for the interview, so I went to the store early and bought some there. After the interview, I went to return the clothes, because they were so expensive. The hiring manager saw me. FML
Today, I had my first interview after weeks of applying everywhere, but I got turned away for being "inappropriately dressed" for the interview. I was wearing the smartest clothes I own. FML
Today, my friends gave me a complete makeover, which included clothes from their wardrobe, to prepare me for an upcoming job interview. I was then declined the position, because apparently, I "looked too wealthy" to need the job. FML
Today, I went to my retail job to buy some clothing. As soon as I walked through the doors, my manager yelled at me for not being in appropriate work clothes. I tried to explain that I was off the clock but he was having none of it. I got written up. FML
Today, my mother insisted I dress very smartly in suit attire for my first job interview at a hippy-style retail store. My interviewer wore a poncho. I didn't get the job. FML
Today, I overheard the interviewer discussing my appearance with his colleague. I’ll admit my shirt didn’t exactly fit and my shoes were in bad shape, but I’m so broke that this is all I could afford at the thrift store. I’d have better clothes if my getting a job didn’t require me having nice clothes. FML
Today, I went for a job interview I scheduled 3 weeks ago. I spent $200 on a new suit to really impress them and practised like crazy every imaginable question they could ask. They already had filled the position 2 weeks ago and forgot to inform me. FML
Today, I spent a hundred dollars on new "business casual" clothes and took two hours to get ready for my interview with a government agency. My interviewer was blind. FML
Today, I was turned down from my dream job at a graphic design firm. Before the interview, concerned about my hobo style would not impress the company, I shaved, cut my long hair, and even bought a suit. They said I wasn't "free-spirited and creative enough." FML
Today, I went to Macy's to go shopping, I was wearing a shirt and tie and dressed nicely. Customers came up to me with questions, but I just ignored them. Minutes later, thinking I was an employee, the manager came and yelled at me, and threatened to fire me. FML

Yes, if you want to work at Victoria's Secret, you don't show up at the interview wearing a silk teddy and fishnet stockings. I'm hiring, though, and that outfit will totally work for me;)

56, if OP was trying to help the chances of getting the job, it would make sense to spend money and buy NICE clothes. However, there is a such thing as OVER dressing. If you look like you think you are too good for the job, they probably will not hire you.

The only one store I can think of that is capable of this much douchebaggery is Abercrombie & Fitch. I used to work there and they require that you dress in their clothes without explicitly saying it and they hire based on looks. It was my first job as a 16 year old and i quickly learned that there is absolutely nothing glorious about working there when you only get paid minimum wage and most of my managers were late 20's/early 30's kids who got off on hitting on younger girls and yes, sleeping with the "prettier ones".

I never said that at all; I just find it a little upsetting when people can't see the difference between casual and business attire- they're pretty different, and it isn't too hard to figure out. If you weren't dressed in business casual attire (at the minimum), then you probably WEREN'T dressed appropriately. Interviews are about making a good first impression, so wearing clothes from the store itself probably made you seem too casual.

You would be suprised at how people come to interviews these days. I've gone so some where women do not wear a bra and men just wear any old t-shirt. I find it disrespectful. Almost as disrespectful as going in front of a judge in pajamas, but that is another subject. People, dress to IMPRESS, not depress.

Why is everyone hating on me? Didnt say it would be right out of law school. Also I am a very smart person I dont think how I dress makes me dumb. I would wear a suit because I want to work in a law office so I know I cant dress like a bum.
