Welcoming

Today, I was having lunch with my fiancé's family. After he excused himself to use the bathroom, his grandmother glared at me, sneered, "I never liked you" and kept eating while the others smirked. When my fiancé returned, everyone pretended nothing had happened. FML

Tell your fiancee later, hopefully he'll understand.

Yikes. I think a talk with your fiance is in order. I doubt he'd think you're making that up, and he should really know if his family is unpleasant to you. Hopefully he'll explain to them that they should be civil to you. Maybe Grandma is going cuckoo though.

Hopefully he trusts her enough to believe her over his family. That's brutal.

I've read enough FML to know that's not always the way things go. sometimes they just believe whatever their family says. it doesn't even have to make sense, or be blatantly obvious

i agree tell him, if he doesn't believe or even consider it maybe you and him need to think about this marriage thing again.

if everyone apparently smirked, I'm pretty sure she was just the only one with balls to say it. hopefully for ops sake you're right though.

They could have just laughed because the grandmother said it. Doesn't mean they hate her too.

If the others weren't thinking the same thing as Grandma, they wouldn't have just sat there smirking. At least one of them would have had a shocked expression on their face, even if no one had the guts to call her out on it.

Damn no one told you they were serving such hatred with lunch! Sorry OP! You can't be liked by everyone. Just continue to be the bigger person.

Agreed! But hopefully her husband is understanding and has a chat with grandma

Well, at least you have it better than the other in-law related fml's around here.

The scariest part of this is that she said it in past tense.

I re-read it and wondered the same thing. I thought I was going nuts for a second.

Why in the balls am I getting downvoted? You guys are crazy. I'm agreeing with #10.

Sorry - when I read it, it seemed to me as though the grandpa planned on OP being gone in a short while. It was kind of a joke. I do see what you mean, though.

what were you expecting? "Today, I'm having lunch with my fiancé and his parents, my fiancé just left the room and his grandma just told me she hates me along with my other in-laws. FML"

#26 I wasn't expecting anything other than what I read, I just interpreted it a different way. The way it was worded sounded as though the in-laws were planning to murder OP - the sneering, the smirking, the sneaky transition when OP's fiancée returned... (I know they weren't, of course. It's just funny how different people process these type of things :P)

@24 for saying shit like "what in the balls"

It could have been "I don't like you." I guess she wanted to make it clear that she has never liked her. It is written in simple past as opposed to perfect present which is not exactly right. "I have never liked you" would state the point in a present tense. "I never" specifies a single event. Like "I never said that" would be a response to someone pertaining to a single incident. "I have never said that" would indicate the totality of never ever having said that ever. Just an example. "I never liked you" is grammatically incorrect in this scenario. "I have never liked you" or "I don't like you" would be grammatically correct. Just because its not technically correct however, it's still understandable. The English language is a fickle woman. It bothered me reading it as well. :S

Seriously? She never liked the OP ever. That's the reason she said she never liked her. It isn't rocket science.

Different meanings for "I never" and "I have never". It's still understandable. Don't shoot the messenger!

Wow, the fact that his whole family seems to be on this secret club on disliking you OP behind your fiancé's back really shows how horrible and fake they are. Definitely tell him and don't YOU pretend like it never happened.

How do people get blue and purple Outlines on their pictures? Sorry it's off topic.

I think in-laws are the hounds of hell

I don't have any in laws but from what I've heard they apparently suck. Be careful, my friend. And maybe talk this over with the fiancé.

Quietly whisper, "And you'll be dead soon. I win."

They don't just dislike you. This dinner sounds more like an evil conspiracy in that family. Beware
