If OP was the one that invited his father out then it stands to reason that OP should pay for the meal, but if they just randomly ran into eachother then OP's father is an ass.

OK a lot of wtf going on here. Did you agree to meet there, did you happen to meet there coincidentally. If you asked him to go eat there then yes you should plan on paying. If he asked you to go eat there then he is an ass. If you both met there, then he's still an ass for getting you to pay, though you should have said "NO" and told the cashier he pays for his own food.
