why? it is a sick day, those are paid and what he could do? payday loans are awful, maybe he has no credit, no friends and no family to get those bus money

When I worked, I had no paid sick days. Not everyone gets paid sick days. I suggest you get that through your thick skull.

Sorry to hear that OP. Harsh times. Maybe try to get a part time job closer to home, to earn a little on the side? This way you won't run out of bus money to get to work and earn the big bucks :)
