Today, I bought my son a nice car for his 18th birthday. When I gave it to him, he just got mad and told me that if I really wanted to spend that much money on him, I should've used it to help him pay for college. FML

Isn't this good? If he prefers learning over a car i would be happy

I'd be happy with the car, but I'd be pretty upset too. Always ask what someone would most like as a gift. If its way out of your spending range, get them something still nice they'll like.

Um how about this... don't buy him a god damn thing. Instead let him WORK FOR and EARN his right to a higher education and/or motor vehicle. This is what that ******* entitled generation that thinks everything should just be ******* handed to them comes from. If he was so damn right and smart he would have gotten a scholarship instead of relying on mommy and daddy to pay for his shit.

He wasn't expecting the car. He said "IF you wanted to spend that much money on me..." He wasn't demanding a car, he just would have preferred something he actually needed more than a car that could put him in more debt paying for gas and insurance on it. You need to pull the stick out of your ass instead of bitching about young people just for the hell of it.

It was a nice gesture but I agree with your son,

He has a good point. If he's going to be living in a dorm, he can just walk or bike to class. If his school is in a city, he can take public transportation wherever he needs to go. But since he has a car, he'll just have to pay insurance on it, pay for the upkeep, pay for gas, pay for a school parking permit, and be the designated driver of his friends. I agree, he should be grateful. But I'm a college student too, and I'd rather have money for textbooks or tuition than a car.

He should be grateful, I didn't get shit for my 18th bday.

If nothing else OP, at least he wants to do the right thing and go to school :-)

Wow look at all these little brats on here agreeing with her son. If I had done that my Dad probably would have taken the car back and never given me anything that nice again! If he really felt that way he should have still said thank you acted grateful and then sold it later on. Even my 3 year old knows it's rude not to say thank you and act happy when someone gives you something!
