Today, I asked my girlfriend's father for permission to take his daughter's hand in marriage. He asked me "Which one?" I said "Uh, the one I'm dating... Lisa." He belched and said, "Yeah sure, throw 'er off a cliff for all I care. Piss off, boy." So much for chivalry. FML

Good on you. Hopefully you don't have to deal with him too much in the future

That was classy to ask for his blessing. It sucks that you may have a classless asshole for a father in law.

In fairness, asking for someone's hand in marriage has nothing to do with chivalry. The rules of chivalry are about how to conduct yourself before a medieval joust....

To be fair, you were asking the wrong person for "permission" by going to her (what's a better word for "snowdrift redneck?") dad when the only one who could give permission is, in fact, her.

Asking for his permission is different from asking for his blessing

What if it was the other daughter? If it didn't matter, why would he ask :s

A. That was pretty decent of you. B. LMAO C. Congrats!

he probably does care about his daughter but doesnt care about who she dates. Would u want him to be over bearing and constantly digging into your business?

Don't invite him to the wedding. If he doesn't care about you asking her to marry you then he shouldn't care about missing it.

He's a dead beat dad. I'm glad you're taking her away from that bullshit.

Looking forward to future family get togethers?
