Today, my mother-in-law visited. She saw my 5-year-old son rip open a chip bag, causing chips go everywhere. She got up in his face and started screaming at him about how he has an "attitude problem". He doesn't, he's autistic and genuinely has trouble with food packaging. FML

Today, I went to Walmart with my mom. At the checkout line I was eating a bag of chips as my mom bought her stuff. I inhaled while eating and I started to choke. The cashier asked me if I was OK. My mom just waved her hand, and said, "Sometimes she does that for attention, ignore her." FML

Today, my father-in law-shared his opinion that autistic kids should be beaten until they act normal. He saw fit to share this while my autistic son was having a meltdown because my father-in-law came to the house without warning, and my son violently hates visitors without prior warning. FML

Today, I caught my mother-in-law filling my one-year-old's cup with Dr. Pepper. When I flipped out, she told me I was overreacting since "all her kids turned out fine." Save for my husband, all her kids are morbidly obese diabetics who’ve struggled with poor diets. She herself is almost 450 lbs. FML

Today, I saw a kid throwing a tantrum in a supermarket. Thinking it was a matter of lack of discipline, I waited for the kid’s mother to come out of the bathroom to tell her how naughty her son was being. I then got to watch her beat her son to the point of unconsciousness. FML

Today, I scolded my son at a buffet after he pointed at an obese woman in a motorized wheelchair and asked how anyone could let themselves get so unhealthy. As I lectured him on genetics and thyroid problems, she rolled past with a plate stacked with an obscene amount of fried food. FML

Today, I was babysitting a 7 year-old brat. He refused to eat his vegetables, so I forbade him from playing until they were finished. He stomped off upstairs, so I let him cool off for a couple of minutes. When I went upstairs, he had taken scissors to all of his mother's clothes. FML

You don't scream at a five year old. Period. My little girl is 4 and also on the spectrum, and while my family is excellent...if they weren't? She wouldn't see them until she was 18 and could make that decision herself, or they bent over backwards and changed their ways. This is a huge FML for your little boy, and it's one for you UNLESS you knew that she was a b*tch and this wasn't shocking and surprising...and you kicked her out in seconds.

You've gotten more than enough advice on how to deal with shitty MIL. For your son, get one of those letter openers that look like the letter "e" and have a hidden blade. They cut through chip quite nicely. Big hug for your son from a fellow autistic, if he likes them. Fist bump, otherwise.

Any office supply store. Walmart. Sometimes Walgreens and target has them. Walmart can hide them outside of office supply section.

Loads of kids have accidents with food, no big deal, tell your son mistakes happen and how to tidy it up. As for the MIL, probably best to tell your spouse what happened and lay down the law on the cow
