A Dutch oven is not something you give, it's something you do. In other words, to "Dutch oven" someone is correct, to give someone a "Dutch oven" is not.

I first heard it as a "covered wagon" which makes more sense cause your pulling the sheets up over the head and not putting someone's head in a cast iron pan.
