Nobody considered that possibly the op's boyfriend just didn't like hearing the stranger compliment his girlfriend because it makes him jealous? I don't like if a stranger does that to my girlfriend.

It sounds like he'd be controlling in a relationship too... That's pretty strange how he punched some stranger in the face for giving you a very good compliment.

I wouldn't have considered dumping him. I would've done it on the spot. Not interested in being with someone who can't control their jealousy and their violent outbursts.
