Today, I rented a car that has a smart key. The proximity of the key determines if the doors will unlock. I went to a meeting and returned to the car with the trunk popped open and all my luggage gone. The rental company decided to store a spare key in the glovebox for safe keeping. FML

Aside from the car having a smartkey...which kinda confuses me on the concept, you deserve it, even if it wasn't a smartkey or not. Why? Why the hell would you leave luggage in your car then go to a meeting? Maybe it's just me but I just don't leave things like that and do other things, if I'm visiting somewhere I put my stuff in the room I'm staying in then go do things.

You don't always have time to do things the slow way on business trips.

thats sucks! You definately need to talk to a high up supervisor about this. Because That is not your fault. They need to replace your belongings.

For anyone who doesnt understand the smart key thing... The car locks automatically when you are so many feet away from the car and then unlocks when the *smart key* (which you will be holding ) is so many feet near the vehicle. It is only a few feet away. So to all the people that are like "oh lock the car" he thought he did by walking away from the veh. That is the appeal of the smart key... Like some people walk away and are not sure if they locked it... it will be locked if you are not by your veh with the smart key.. so all of you who are like you dumb ass for not locking the car... YOU GUYS ARE DUMB ASSES for commenting on something you obviously know absolutely nothing about...

uhm, I have a prius with a smart key and it doesn't lock itself when you walk away. Maybe newer ones do as that's a nice feature, but also the Prius system knows if the key is inside the car and doesn't let you unlock the car in that situation (unless you have another on the outside). I doubt they'd remove that safety feature while adding a convenience feature.

they don't lock themselves when you walk away you still have to push a button on it so know what the **** you're saying or don't say it at all

YDI for renting a car that locks itself for you, you lazy ****. how hard is it to remember to lock your doors on your own?

it was a rental car, he probably didnt pick it because of the locking feature. think before you speak dumb ass

Op..i believe you should sue the rental company for not informing you that they had left a spare key in the glove department. Unless it was written in your papers and you just signed without reading... Your not at fault if this happened without you beimg aware. Everyone else...calling op a dumbass or telling him he should have checked if the car was unlocked is dumb if you yourself havent dealt with a smartcar. He chose this car knowing it will only unlock and work if the key is in his hand. When you walk away its meant to lock all doors..him going back will unlock them since the key only works in distance. Its not Op's fault for going to a meeting or renting ths car its the companies for not informing him about the spare(which would really have came in handy) Dont blame OP for you guys being out of date and understaning the technology that many corporations came out with. OP..i feel with you..i hope you get your stuff paid for. And dont have to stay in your same cloths for the rest of your visit. :/

rental companies always leave the spare key in the glovebox

Your post makes no sense. The key in the glove box opened the car? Get real

why not just make the key a normal key in the glove compartment

Wait. I'm completely confused. Wasn't the car locked? How did they get the key out of the glove box?
