Today, I found out nobody in my family wants to come to my college graduation. I spent 4 years and $60,000 to be the first person in my family to go to college, and nobody wants to see me graduate because the 4 hour ceremony is too long. FML

You didn't spend 60k on the ceremony... you spent it on the education you got, and the diploma.

Guess you get a free ticket to not go to one of their weddings, funerals, etc...!

Yeah thats ****** up and no one can say the OP deserves this. Just cause some of you pay more for college or because the ceramony is 4 hours long I would understand if your siblings or aunts and uncles wouldnt wanna attend but your parents definatly should be there thats just ****** up. number 9 your a genious but I would take it a step further and just bring this up whenever any family function happens at all for anything. If your mom needs money just say "remember that time I was graduating from college where the **** were you?" dont just use it once use it ALL the time

sorry dude i know this sucks similar thing happened to me just no one wanted to go to mine because it was farther away and both my sisters had already graduated from better colleges

Congratulations! Now's the time to realize that what you've fought for is for you. You've chosen a different route than your entire family has ever chosen and that means a couple of things: the small-minded ones of them probably can't appreciate what you've done and may think you think you're superior to them. The ones who don't resent you for your accomplishments probably will not appreciate them fully, either. And don't forget, they may not be able to afford to take a long trip that might impact their work schedules and which will reflect poorly on them in contrast. Try not to take it too hard, and remember, unless you're willing to share the credit, don't expect to share the adulation. Unfortunately, I've learned the hard way, that's the truth.

that's absolutely ridiculous! unless they are seriously sick or elderly they need to be there plain and simple

Number 42, you fail as a child of parents. I'd give my eye teeth to have my parents be ever once in my life interested enough in something I did to insist on going. I can't even tell you how sad your comment makes me. Don't go into the world talking like that. It's just obscene.

hmmm.... it's a mystery why they never graduated college

I do agree with #2 that college graduations are mostly useless hype (having been to a few) but at the same time, it's not about the inconvenience or the useless hype; it's about supporting your friend/family member who worked so hard to accomplish graduation. It's just rude not to go.

I know exactly what you are saying! My dad doesn't want to drive the 400 miles to come watch me walk this saturday. It is a bummer indeed :(

Wow. You're so self-absorbed. Maybe they have to work at that time and can't afford to but are too embarassed to say something. Maybe you should have considered going to school for yourself, not to show off to impress your family.
