actually, ribs breaking is a very common result of the Heimlich maneuver. the bottom 2 pairs of ribs are called "floater ribs", because they aren't as attached as the others, making them easier to break. the location of these floater ribs is right near the sight of the compressions, so it's not at all the boyfriend's fault that the ribs were broken. in fact, it's more of an indication that he did the maneuver correctly.
