Today, I spilt purple washing detergent all over my white carpet. Desperate to get it up I grabbed a blue towel and started mopping it up. The detergent hasn't stained the carpet at all, the blue dye from the towel has. FML

Today, as I was about to go to bed, the lid came off a brand new bottle of laundry detergent and it toppled down my carpeted basement steps. 3 hours, 2 dozen microfiber cloths, and a bucket of water later and my steps are still full of suds. I went to bed at 3 am and my 10 week old was up at 4 am. FML

Today, my husband decided to drain his motorcycle oil into an empty bottle of laundry detergent. Also today, I decided to lift a stain out of my white comforter with some detergent I found in the garage. FML

Today, I dyed my hair. It was all going well, until I forgot I had a head full of product and scratched an itch. I didn't realise my mistake until later, and now have to replace my six-month old sofa because it has a huge stain that alternates from purple to bleach. FML

Today, while dog sitting, the dog peed on the carpet. There was a bottle of cleaning spray on the counter so I sprayed the spot. Turns out that spray was Clorox Bleach. Now their carpet is bright orange. FML

Today, I remembered my mom got her carpet cleaned and to be careful while she was at work. To be nice, I vacuumed the whole house. Feeling proud of myself, I got a drink and went upstairs. I tripped and spilled red Kool-Aid all over the floor. FML

Today, I gave a carpet shampooing demonstration in a stranger's home. To my surprise, the white expensive carpet was dyed grey due to something in the solution. The owner held me hostage in her house by barracading the door until my manager got there. FML

Today, I was at my summer babysitting job. The family's dog puked on the carpet and I proceeded to clean it up with baking soda and a mix of water/vinegar. Instead of blending in with the other areas of the carpet, the one spot I cleaned is white while the other areas are still darkened by filth. FML

Today, I was cleaning my bathroom, and accidentally spilled bleach, ruining my shower curtain, rugs, and towels. While attempting to wipe up the bleach, I knocked over a bottle of shower cleaner. It read, "WARNING: DO NOT MIX WITH BLEACH." I still can't go in the house. FML

Today, it was my first day as a vacuum salesman. While I was demonstrating how well it removed stains, I managed to smear stuff over the area I was cleaning. So not only was I unsuccessful in removing the original stains, I left them with worse carpet than when I got there. FML

Today, I spilled grape juice on my new white shirt. I bleached it and scrubbed it until there was nothing left to see. I threw it on, ready to dart out of the door, when my dad walks in after fixing the lawnmower and puts his greasy hand right on my shoulder. FML

haha man thats a blowout. one time i did spilt grape soda on a white rug and then i spilt milk on it to think it would make it fixed. now it smells like vomit.

Actually, both are valid. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/spilt Personally, spilt sounds to my ears like what a Brit would say, and since the OP is from the U.K. that makes sense.

Especially since detergent, whether for dishes, clothing, or whatever ("washing detergent" isn't very clear) doesn't stain things unless you just never wash it off... and then it's not a stain so much as you having detergent left on your carpet. If it was for clothing, SUPER YDI since you should know it is intended for cloth and doesn't stain it.

If she was afraid it would stain her white carpet, she was probably also afraid it would stain a white towel. Hence, she used a darker towel, which she didn't realize would stain the carpet worse than the detergent.

I've yet to see a spill on here happen to a fabric that isn't white. I don't get it. You'd think at some point someone would find it just as bad that they spilled red juice on a light blue carpet or something. Anyway, it's your fault for not realizing that laundry detergent cleans whites without discoloring them. It's only plastered all over the ads and packaging.

It could have been dish detergent. Sometimes I'll spill some on my clothes while I'm washing the dishes and it stains just like anything else if you don't get it out right away.
