Today, my cat was diagnosed with FIV, to which my in-laws said, "That's impossible!" Apparently, what is possible though is that aliens are stealing their pool water. FML

Uh duh. Aliens are the source of all our problems. Like stealing only the left socks and making those creepy house noises at night. They're infiltrating the world!

You have a left and right sock? Mine the same either way

Toe socks aren't really interchangeable

Well, when they likely steal both socks sometimes. After all, you only notice a sock is missing when you can't divide them all into pairs.

Aliens need to drink too! You should be thankful they prefer the taste of pool water.

Your in-laws sound perfectly logical. Evaporation is clearly a myth formulated by the illuminati. You should be grateful for their supreme wisdom.
On a serious note- I'm sorry about your cat.

Evaporation is about as real as evolution. Everyone knows water originates from the tears of God, and that thunder is him coughing when he's sick. He must get colds often...

I was always told he was bowling...

Duh, thunder is when God is bowling. Rain is when his toilet overflows. Don't they teach you kids anything in school?

What is FIV?

"FIV stands for feline immunodeficiency virus. It is a lentivirus, the same class of virus as HIV. FIV, which can live in many different tissues in cats, typically causes a weakening of the cat's immune system."

#7 is correct. I'll also add that similarly to HIV, being FIV positive alone isn't much of an issue. It's FIP, which is sort of the feline equivalent to AIDS, that really creates problems.

well I don't know who else would steal pool water but aliens.
On a serious note, I'm sorry to hear that about your cat!

It sounds like the aliens weren't satisfied with stealing just pool water and have moved onto stealing brains ... assuming that your in-laws had any brains to begin with!
Sorry to hear about your cat. There are immunomodulator therapies available though I don't know much about the cost. Good luck.

Why don't they believe it? And I swear if anyone says "YDI for not getting your car vaccinated" I will rip my hair out in frustration.

People who don't vaccinate their car really deserve bad things though. It's highly irresponsible to drive a car without.

I'm so sorry, OP! Is FIV incurable like HIV? Your poor kitty. I hope there's at least meds and treatments you can get for him so he won't feel sick.

It is incurable, but they can still usually live out their lives at least.

I'm so sorry, OP. My cat, Theo, passed away due to FIV induced FIP five years ago. Everybody handles pet illness differently, but one thing that helped me was making sure I was as hands-on as possible with his treatment.
I know the diagnosis can be overwhelming. Please know, however, that many FIV positive cats live 9 long, happy lives. If your kitty does take a turn for the worse, do your best to fully appreciate the time you have left with him/her. It sounds obvious, but when my lab got sick, being present rather than worrying about her future was hard for me.
Best of luck
