West Virginia was not a confederate state. In fact, Virginia seceding is why West Virginia came to exist. It was part of Virginia, but when Virginia decided to secede, the Virginians in the west of the state decided they didn't want to secede, and split from Virginia to stay with the Union. Kind of ironic when you think about it.....
