Today, my boyfriend asked my father for permission to marry me. My father refused, on the basis that I'm the only person in the house with a job, and if I leave he will have to start looking for work. My boyfriend won't marry me without his permission, and my lazy father won't change his mind. FML

If he needs your father's permission to marry you, then he doesn't love you. He'd marry you regardless of what your father said if he really loved you.

Your father is not responsible enough to be in a position to be the one to ask for your hand in marriage. Find a responsible family member and ask them to assume that responsibility and then inform your boyfriend.
