Today, I was waitering at the restaurant that I work at when I collected a credit card bill that was worth $120 and a big zero on the tip line. Angered, I turned to a co-worker and said "I knew this asshole wasn't going to tip me." The guy was standing right behind me with $30 in his hand. FML

That was stupid. Plenty of people pay tips with cash instead, myself included.

I hope he threw the money in your face. Ha, no I don't. I hope he gave the money to your co-worker.

Ok in america we tip....its the right thing to do. When I waitressed I made 3.15 an hour because tips are suppose to pay you up tp minimum wage. You have no idea how hard waitressing can be....and the people who don't tip are the worst of all overly demanding, letting there children throw stuff all over the place...just acting like trash. People who said ydi obviously have never had a job like this and take advantage of people who do...if you don't wanna tip go some place where you serve your damn self!

I cant believe people are being so hard on OP and how many people are such assholes about tipping. I worked as a waitress and made 2.50 an hour so I depended on tips. There is nothing worse then being stiffed on a tip because we depend on it. Clearly the OP was not a bad waiter because the guy was going to tip him $35 but after a long shift of dealing with bitchy customers and just being on your feet for that long can make anyone cranky. Because he was in a bad location for complaining about his tips it is a fml

Well, while it is your fault for jumping the gun like that, I hope the guy can understand your position and not be angry in turn...Maybe you shouldn't get angry in the future~?

lol waitering... ****** deal with it... people who get tipped get way overpaid when they generally dont deserve it. ive worked at a skyline chili for 3 years making the food, doing dishes, bussing tables, running the cash register, and working the drive thru, all of which go untipped. my annoying, bitchy coworkers (girls) that serve whine constantly about not making upwards of 100 a night, doing a job easier than mine, while i get 35 taxables dollars for working twice as long. chill out. you dont deserve peoples money for doing your job satisfactorily..you deserve it for doing something extraordinary

Seriously, everyone who is saying tips aren't mandatory is either not from the U.S. or has obviously never worked in food service. I don't care how shitty your service was, and I don't care how much you don't like the concept of tipping-- if you're even a remotely decent human being, you tip your waiter/waitress. They depend on that money for income, and if you can afford to eat at a restaurant, you should be able to afford to tip. End of story.

I think you shouldn't have said it while you were out on the restaurant floor, but, c'est la vie. I don't always tip, either. I'm not a demanding person, and I don't ask a lot. I don't like hair in my food, dirty utensils, etc. As long as my server isn't a complete jerk, there's pretty much a guaranteed tip. However, there has been an exaggeration and/or miscommunication made here by a number of servers or former servers. If you're not getting minimum wage, talk to your employer, since THEY, not the customers, are required BY LAW to make up the difference. Otherwise, just make sure the tables and whatnot are clean and that you're not flipping off the customers all willy-nilly, and you know there isn't a problem with your tip. http://www.dol.gov/esa/minwage/q-a.htm

hahahahaha that blows. i know ive had similar experience, but they werent standing behind me & it ws only like 5 cash on top of the tip theyd already given me on their card. : i understand that it's easy to get angry becus i get stiffed so much as a waitress also - even if i do a great job. & i swear by it (that i do a good job & still get stiffed. becus id totally understand not being tipped if i did shitty). #68 is my hero. haha i always tipped 15-20% if my waiter did good. even if they were complete asses i'd still give atleast 10% js becus i know tips are they're earnings. people that don't tip are idiots. if a couple dollars really means that much to them - perhaps they shouldn't be dining out.

I don't even call it a tip. I call it free money. Did you get enough free money? How much free money is appropriate to give you? Are you upset because you didn't get free money?

Most people would not give a server a 25% tip unless he or she provides excellent service. Hence, one must assume that OP provided good service. I would probably knock it down to the normal 16-18% once I heard a comment like OP's coming from my server; a complaint to the manager on duty would also be in order.
