Today, I was waitering at the restaurant that I work at when I collected a credit card bill that was worth $120 and a big zero on the tip line. Angered, I turned to a co-worker and said "I knew this asshole wasn't going to tip me." The guy was standing right behind me with $30 in his hand. FML

That was stupid. Plenty of people pay tips with cash instead, myself included.

I hope he threw the money in your face. Ha, no I don't. I hope he gave the money to your co-worker.

As many people have said, I'll often tip in cash instead of putting more on the card I'm paying with. #90, you're a moron who's clearly never worked as a server before. The wages for one is something like $2.13 an hour, with it expected they'll make enough in tips to hopefully reach minimum wage or more. It's part of the experience, if you go to a sit-down restaurant and are served by someone, you pay them too. If you just want food, go to Burger King. The employees there actually make more from their employer.

Another very valid point is that most servers tip out a percentage of sales to the rest of the support staff. If you dont tip, the server ends up having to pay OUT OF THEIR POCKET to serve you.

#73. that case would be understandable if the waiter ACTED like a dick. however - a lot of people don't realize that it's not always the server's fault if the food is late / made incorrectly. most of the time actually it's the cook's fault / or the hosts fault if they over seat the waiter at once and they don't have reasonable time to get to things. you should probably take those things into account before not tipping your waiter. more than half the time they don't deserve the bullshit they get from customers. becus im sure if the server was jus a complete idiot / ass hole - the restaurant's responsibility is to get rid of them. they want business - they dont keep asses around in a business. & #92. at my restaurant we don't pool our tips. we keep everything we earn - except for 1% of our sales that we give to a busboy & bartender.

If you were that quick to be so harsh of him, it is doubtful that you gave him service worth receiving a tip for

68 - you clearly don't live in the US. United States Federal law requires all servers to earn minimum wage - not base wage that is the minimum amount their employ has to pay them hourly, but the same minimum wage as any other position in the US. If your tips combined with your base wage, don't bring your hourly wage up to the same amount as the minimum wage in your state, your employer is required to make up the difference. Tipping is a REWARD for exemplary service - its what enables servers to make more than the minimum wage that a crappy server would make. If a server is too much of a douche bag to put any effort into EARNING THEIR REWARD they should change jobs into something else. A crappy server can make just as much money at a crappy job, without needing to complain about people who aren't rewarding them because they prefer to be crappy, as they can when they refuse to do the minimum amount expected to receive a reward for provided service to dine-in customers. If you want to be rewarded you provided wonderful service. If you want don't want tips at all, you provide crappy service, and thank your customers for not giving you unearned tips

Okay, seriously, it might sound bad, but until you serve you really have no idea. Can you imagine how you would feel if you worked hard on a table and how frustrating it would be to get stiffed on a $120 check? I mean, yeah, that sucks and maybe he spoke too soon, but put yourself in his position.

if waitresses dont like the amount they get paid, they should get a different job. i am not their employer and should not be required to pay their tip. I am so sick of you rude waiters saying where's my tip when a) you do not under any circumstances deserve one for bringing me the wrong order, and making me wait half an hour to eat at a dirty table and b) when i am just about to reach into my pocket to give you a tip it is unbelievably disgusting that you could even demand money from people like that. also, i work for about 2.50 an hour doing twice as much work as a waiter and I don't demand extra money from the patrons i serve. if you want more money ask your frigging boss

#36 "You are not entitled to anything more than your salary." The problem is a lot of restaurants pay very low salaries because they know the employees make a decent amount off tips anyway. Which is a ripoff, but still. However if I were that guy I'd have just left.
