My parents had a cat just like that before I was born. He is still legendary in our family. His farts could clear a room in seconds, and my uncles who were just kids thought it was good fun to pick him up and see everyone scatter.

Ad a cat owner, I’ve done research on this. Cats actually have glands near their anus that, much like skunks, release a foul odor when threatened.

My cat as he's gotten older needs his anal glands expressed regularly because if we don't his farts smell like his asshole has necrosis. And the smell fills the house
