Today, I called my boss to let her know that I was suffering from severe depression and that my doctor suggested I take a month's leave. Her response? "Glad you are getting help, however we can't hold your job. No need to come to the office, we'll mail your stuff to you." FML
I agree, your life sucks 40 975

Go sue happy. You got the doc's note already right?

Well unless you had something written from your doctor saying you needed to take leave, your boss had no obligation to hold your job for you. It's most likely going to be an ongoing problem and if you need to take that much leave for it it's most likely going to effect your performance again.

huh.......well i guess it's time for the old "Get a rope and hang yourself" suicide....and if you do that, I AM IN NO WAY RESPONSIBLE :D

ok the people that said the OP deserved it are idiots how could they deserve it, depression is extrmely serious. legal action should be taken because this is unfair dissmisal, it is in my country anyway

Yeah guys, I totally wanted to have an abusive & neglectful childhood, where I was molested.. and told I was worthless. My fault for having that effect the way my brain handled things, right? I totally asked for the depression, and bipolar that I do have. I planned it, actually. I said: "Kay, I'm going to purposely struggle with the thought of suicide for the lulz, and to aggravate people, and make them think this is something I can't control" -- you got me. It's not like I realize my depression should be controllable, or that the way I feel is really unjustified, no.. not at all -- I want to have the constant feel of hating everything I am! I'm sure none of you have any friends, or people you care about with depression/mental illness. Of course you don't, because everyone's faking it! LOL!!!!1!!111

did you really expect your job to wait? it's not their problem and welcome to the real world. you have to cope like all us depressed bastards and realize you're close friends if any are the only ones who will wait, even then that's allot to expect . you have to be strong, no one will be for you

suck it up! shit happens. Quit whining and get on with your life!

If your doctor told you to take a month off and they fired you, you can sue them. It's ADA compliance and it's illegal what they did. Talk to a lawyer.

Not necessarily. If the company is too small, they are not required to comply. The employer is only required to *reasonably accommodate* the employee. If it is financially impossible for the company to find a temp with the required skills to fill in, or operate with out a replacement, they are under no obligation to hold the job open. Either way, the submitter is a dick, sticking their problems on their employer, and their employer should not have to accommodate, that is an abuse of the ADA system.

As for everyone whining about the employer not being more sensitive, well, wah. The manager is trying to manage. As someone who suffered from pretty severe depression before getting a grip on it, I think I can say that it makes you a pretty crappy employee. I tried very hard to do my job well, but was too overwhelmed from struggling with my own illness. In my case, it even affected my cognitive skills. I was spacey, indecisive and just not really a person that you could depend on. I fell terrible for anyone who ever had to manage me. The manager was probably just ready to move on and find someone who could concentrate on the work - work that they have pressure on them to have done.
