Today, I overheard my mother and sister talking so I stopped to eavesdrop. I recently enlisted in the Marines, and they were talking about what they would do with the money if I died. FML

Today, while chatting with my in-laws, I told them about my upcoming spinal surgery. Soon after, when I went to get us some drinks, I overheard them murmuring about how many surgeries I've already had, how I'm a drain on the healthcare system, and how I should ideally just die. FML

Today, I listened to a voicemail from my mom about how she misses me and can't wait to see me when I get back from vacation. Thinking she hung up, my mother then had a conversation with my aunt about how quiet the house is without me and how she'd be blessed if I didn't come home. FML

#24 and #197 - Follow their advice re.: your SGLI. When my aunt was in the Air Force, we always freaked out whenever we'd read a news item about a military death. When she was in the Panamanian embassy after it was stormed, the only thing that saved her was fear on the part of the locals re.: the Marines. I don't think your family's behavior is "normal". I'm sorry that you had to hear that.

That really is pretty shitty. I'm sorry man. My fiances a Marine. We actually had a discussion one time about what I would do with the money if something were to ever happen to him (HE brought it up, not me btw). I still don't know what I'd do with it. I don't think I'd want to spend it on anything to be honest. For example, say I used it on my kids college fund. Would they feel guilty that the only reason they got the education they did was because of their father's death? Or a new car or whatever. I wouldn't be able to use whatever it is because it only came about because of his death. That's just my take on it.
