If you still want to marry him, then button up and save it for later. When you guys are in better financial shape, you can say it's about time you got a real ring. Or, you can always say, "Well, today's the day I go have the ring appraised for the homeowner's insurance." Rings have to be insured and appraised. If he doesn't know that, he will s&1t a brick at the realization.
