When he said 'get a ******* friend' you should have kept waving looking ahead and have said 'hey' like as if you were waving to someone behind him... The asshole would have felt embarrassed.

People need to start being nicer, he could simply make a little gesture like "no, not you, behind you" with a smile and... Simple as that, you wouldn't feel bad about it. There's no need for being rude.
