Today, my co-worker and I were having a conversation in Russian. Our boss overheard us talking, shouted, "I know you're talking about me! I speak Spanish too!" and threatened to fire us. FML

Sorry OP that your boss was trying so hard to sound smart and just ended up looking like a dumbass. If he was gonna call you out for "talking about him in Spanish" he should have done so in Spanish.

It is always considered rude to speak anything other than the common language in a mixed group or public setting. If it is not appropriate to say publicly, then it doesn't belong at work. Many companies have policies about this and you can legally be fired for speaking a foreign language for any reason other than company business. I know it feels wrong to you but is the truth. Your boss is a complete moron for his handling of the situation, and for that, I am sorry.

No, it's not always considered rude. Most of the time, two people can have a conversation in whatever language they want and no one cares.

It sounds like two Russian speakers were BY THEMSELVES and having an INNOCUOUS conversation in a language they both speak. I don't get the impression that they actually were talking about the boss, or that they were around others until the boss showed up.
