Today, my boyfriend proposed. The ring just had a piece of graphite on it. My boyfriend argued that since graphite and diamonds are both just forms of carbon, it is the same thing. FML

I see both sides here: the OP may feel that her boyfriend was just looking for a loophole in buying a diamond, since he didn't seem to give much of an explanation. If he had gone into detail about how love isn't about the ring, then he would have been understood better. But many girls do dream of that diamond one day, and it might come as a disappointment if your boyfriend makes excuses like "it doesn't matter if it's not exactly a diamond, right?"
