Today, my boyfriend proposed. The ring just had a piece of graphite on it. My boyfriend argued that since graphite and diamonds are both just forms of carbon, it is the same thing. FML

You're marrying him; who cares about the ring? At least he's putting some thought into it and being sweet and funny and original, unlike every other jerk who just proposes at a restaurant with a diamond. Besides, as someone who actually owns diamonds, I can tell you that they're pretty boring. :P

omg that's the most romantic thing I've ever heard. your sooo lucky! why are you posting here?

hahaha that sounds EXACTLY like something my boyfriend would say. science dorks

So Wat!!! at least he Is trying to make an effort to be with u! and u don't evn appreciate it... maybe he doesn't hve the money to buy an engagement ring rite now but he thought it would b the best time to propose... and btw..... WAT WAS YOUR ANSWER?

Well, you know... he's totally right. He probably put a lot of thought into it, and decided that money could easily be placed somewhere more appropriate-- such as, towards the actual wedding. Be happy that he proposed to you at all. Of course, graphite isn't the best choice, seeing as you can draw on a piece of paper using the right, but, as they say, it's the thought that counts. :3 I, as a bit of a science nerd myself, think that's totally adorable and I really hope you said yes.

Now you have more money to spend on a house, restaurants, cars, kids stuff, or whatever else you'll need when you're married.

smart of him...& his excuse was good enough...but ydi for dating a broke guy :p

OP, I don't think it's been said enough to be honest. Some people would kill to be proposed to, and you only care about some stupid piece of gold? I wouldn't care if it was literally a cracker jack ring. As one commenter said, you are exactly the kind of girl that gives females a bad name. This is so damn stereotypical.
