Today, I was volunteering at a nursing home. As a volunteer, I'm not supposed to accept any money or gifts from any of the residents. However, one elderly woman kept insisting I take her gold watch. After politely refusing for the fifth time, she decided to chuck it at my face. FML

I have actually found ways to help defuse situations like this. Usually, I say something like, "If I lose my job accepting this, then I won't be able to spend anymore time here" or "my boss really doesn't like when we accept gifts, so why don't you hold on to it, hey, it's not like I'm going anywhere!" and try to lighten the mood. You have to show them that you appreciate the thought, but the time spent together is more important.
