Better safe than dead. You did the right thing. I do Carbon monoxide and gas leak checks all the time with my fire department and I run into people I know all the time. I don’t even pay attention to how messy their houses are. I’m sure he’s the same way and doesn’t care

You can also call the gas company if you smell gas. (From outside the home. You should still get everyone out and don't switch anything on or off.) Probably the best option if it is just a mild odor.
