Today, I received a $20 gift card to Tim Horton's as a prize, and decided to use it. At the register, I was told that I'd essentially won an empty gift card. FML

well, free nothing is better than expensive nothing

Was the prize from an official event or just from something like a friends party? Depends on where you got it, you should request a new one. You shouldn't be cheated out of something you won.

But nothing from nothing means nothing... and ya gotta have something.

18, I'd explain math to you, but I think at this point, you're just too far behind in this subject to get the 'nothing' statement.

No 25, it's not trolling. 18 is just having trouble with multiplication using 0. Lets not judge. Treat 18 as you would treat other children who fell behind in math.

Well it wasn't free if op had to then pay for their own meal

Lol Tim Hortons is like the opposite of expensive.

When I was in high school, I won a 50 dollar gift card to Walmart. When I went to redeem it (months after I graduated), I found out there was only 50 cents on it.

are you sure nobody in your family used it before you ?

At least you didn't buy the gift card.

Does anyone buy gift cards for themselves? I mean it's called a -gift- card

People buy them for themselves from places like Giant Eagle that give you fuelperks (money off each gallon of gas you get)

I buy iTunes gift cards. As far as I know that's the only way to put money onto your device.

#32 - Unless you put in your credit card information.

I buy gift cards for myself, only so that i can change my paper money into currency i can use online, since, being 17 i don't have a credit card

I'm 17 and have a debit card. They can be used in the same places. But with debit cards you can only spend money that you have.

#45 you should probably stop making cyanide sandwiches because that sounds very unhealthy.

59: Life lesson: Only spend money you have.

I recommend you use that same logic when you get your first crest card too

You can have a debit card at 17

You know what they say... Best things in life as free, right?

Take it as a message from the food gods that you need a diet

Tim Hortons isn't exactly fast food, she could have used the gift card for tea or yogurt and berries. Or she could get something delicious because everyone is allowed to indulge themselves every once in awhile.

I hope you know that was a joke. soothe your boobs don't have a rack attack

If you ended up spending money there anyways it's marketing genius!

How the hell do they give you an 'empty gift card". Aside from that, at least it was free and you didn't lose your own money that you put on it.

happens a lot. we had people buy gift card from where I work and for whatever reason there was empty even tho the cashier add the Money and the customer paid. that why you keep both the receipt and activation slip

Yep and also why it's always a good idea to buy them separately and stick the receipt in the card or envelope or whatever when you gift it! Just in case!

You know what they say..it is the thought that counts? Apparently this one adds to zero.
