Today, my mother met a new member of my band. He's a piano player from Mexico City. She introduced herself as my mother, then asked him if he spoke Spanish or Mexican. This lead to a long talk about how they speak Spanish in Mexico too. She didn’t believe him. FML

Today, I introduced my Spanish friend to a girl I've had a crush on for a long time. Because he only spoke Spanish and she only spoke English, I was the translator. The first thing he said to her was, "You are really pretty." I translated it as "I like other men." Later, they found out. FML

Today, I showed up at my boyfriend's work to surprise him by speaking in Spanish, his first language. I've been taking classes secretly. He smiled, kissed me, and then finished telling his friend, in Spanish, that I'm boring and ugly but he's got nothing better going on. FML

Today, at my daughter's fundraiser, I noticed that a guy with a face only a fist could love kept staring at her. I said "Beautiful, isn't she?" Before I could tell him to keep it in his damned pants, he replied "Hah. She's my girlfriend, dude. Total beast in the sack." Complete news to me on both counts. FML

I agree with you SOMAgirl. The father is being judgemental. Unfortunately, usually the 2nd question in a conversation when people meet is "so, what do you do?". This culture defines peoples worth by their jobs, unless their independently rich. The dads major concern is that his daughter will have to support herself and her future husband. As a father of a daughter, I know where he's coming from even though I think you're right that he should be happy that she's with someone that makes her happy.

Come on, you people! Haven't any you ever heard of a Phelgmencologist? It's a person who studies phlegm and mucus. Next time you get a hacking cough, put some of what you cough up in a Ziploc bag and give it to him. He'll tell you exactly what you need to do.
