In most cases yes, but in some... no. When my now-husband and I slept together for the first time, it was both our FIRST time. It was romantic, enjoyable and wasn't over in a hurry. We had a good time and I can honestly say that my first time was great. Why? because we were both truly ready.

If it was like that he's an ass. The guy I lost my virginity to was really gentle just to make it hurt the least. It was the best. I didn't come but that wasn't expected. :) Hope your next time is better. :)
