That’s the great thing about vacuum cleaners. Broken or not they still suck.

Been there, done that. Fortunately, I was able to extract said sock after taking the upright vacuum apart without anything being broken. It was jammed up against the impeller, which generates the suction and passes all the detritus along and into the bag.

Did it suck them right off your feet? Most often when a vacuum stops working, it is because the belt broke. Annoying, but not too expensive or difficult to change. Hopefully it was that.
