Sounds like his way of saying "the last four years weren't actually perfectly happy, but I don't know how to tell you that." Better that he finally broke it off rather than wasting more of your time, but that's still gotta hurt. Sorry OP.

Sounds like he has some issues to work out about letting go. My first love was killed in a car accident four years ago and it is still, to this day, hard to take.
