Don’t ask a question if you’re not prepared for the answer.
OP, I am an engineer by profession and a professional "nerd". There are a lot worse things than being "boring" - like being a felon or a thrill seeker or having a tendency towards addiction, or being abusive. OP - People like talking about themselves and generally not so much listening about other's interests unless it's a shared interest. Learn to ask reasonable questions of others about things that interest them such as their hobbies or interests or job. You will notice some topics get the person interested - Just ask a few more questions and let them talk . Become a good listener and people will like being with you... No one ever likes a braggart or someone who goes on about something that's not interesting to them. Once you know what the other person is interested in then talk about that as well as throwing in a bit about yourself and your own interests. But don't go overboard about things where there is no shared interest. Remember conversation is a two way street, listen at least as much as you talk.
