Today, I got robbed in a elevator. Obviously I got scared, and I immediately called my mom to seek comfort. Instead of comforting me, she started yelling and calling me stupid. FML

Today, I was at the mall with my mom. She was pissing me off, so I started screaming at her and causing a scene. I ended up falling all the way down the up escalator. Everyone saw and people clapped. FML

Today, I was getting food at a buffet. Suddenly, my mom appeared and started screaming at a guy for pushing me. I wasn't pushed by anyone, I just tripped over nothing. The poor guy looked so confused and embarrassed, and my mom wouldn't let me defend him. FML

Today, at school, I got stuck in the elevator and was about to panic before I remembered I had my phone. I called my mother and she called the school to tell them that I was stuck. They got me out in a few minutes and then confiscated my phone and gave me two detentions for using it in school. FML

Today, my mother set off the alarms at Walmart by shoplifting. She shouted at me to run, which I didn't. I had to get a ride home from the security guard, since my mother left without me because I didn't get to her car fast enough. FML

If your mom was your first call, you are stupid. Your first call should be the police. Your second should be a lawyer. Your third call should be to building management to demand restitution for your loss and mention that you have the lawyer.

Sometimes people scream and say stupid shit because they're scared for you. You can either tell your mom to back off or ignore. Ultimately, none of it was your fault.

It depends a lot on context. If you are a child that’s a reasonable reaction. If you are an adult you call the police, not Mom for comfort.

I hope you called the police first. But it's ok to be scared and traumatized. My wife's uncle was killed in an elevator robbery, so definitely not something to treat with scorn.
