Today, I found out the real reason my dad bought a new car and generously gave me his old one. He knew the engine was about to fail and didn't want it to be his problem when it finally did. It blew out while I was driving at high speed on the motorway. Just my luck. FML

Today, my dad brought home a used hunk of junk from someone he knew. It was covered in rust and dents, and the engine was making weird noises. Thinking he was being generous, he said to me, "When you get your license, you'll be driving it!" It then died with a loud bang and black smoke from under the hood. FML

Today, I came home to find my dad had backed into my already crappy car. The reason they didn't buy me a nicer car in the first place was they were afraid I'd wreck it. FML

Today, my dad is too old to drive, period, and yet while I was at work my wife thought it was a good idea to let him try her new Mercedes, which by the way I bought and insured. He used the accelerator like he was driving a shitbox Nissan and destroyed our local kebab shop's big front window and door. FML

Today, my car broke down. My dad insisted he could fix it, but screwed up in the process. After finally getting the car towed to a mechanic, I was told that I'd only needed a new water pump, but thanks to the damage my dad did, fixing it all will cost me a small fortune. FML

Today, I illicitly borrowed my dad's car to go to the store, but crashed into my mom's car as she and dad were returning from my grandma's house. Both cars are totalled, my mom is in hospital with a broken collarbone, and I realised dads really can make steam come out their ears if they’re really mad. FML

Today, I bought my very first car. My dad insisted on driving it, just to see how it handles, and drove it right off the bridge near our house into our river because he hasn’t driven anything in 15 years, which also means he has no insurance, at all. FML

Today, I was driving to visit my parents for the first time in two years. After spending about $4000 to make sure my car wouldn't break down on the journey, around the halfway point, the front tire popped and the engine blew out. I'm about 5 states away from both my parents and my home. FML

An engine doesn't just combust... The worst thing that could happen is that he has to pull over and slow down with the compartment on fire. Do you know how long it takes for a fire to spread from the engine compartment to the cab? More than two seconds like all of these people think.

Engines don't usually just blow out of nowhere though, there's almost always some sign of failure. A knocking noise, pinging, rattle, low oil pressure, high temperature, etc.... Need to pay attention to your car, and get it checked if something seems out of the ordinary!

While I agree with these comments in general, we have no idea how long OP has had the car or how far he has driven it. He could've just gotten it and not known the cars regular noises, temp, etc.

Seriously. If someone close to me gave me a car, I would expect them to tell me what's wrong with it. If it was making a weird noise and I wasn't told about it, I might assume it's not a big deal because I wasn't told about it. (That's not necessarily true, I would personally ask about it immediately, but I wouldn't fault someone for not asking)
